Katelyn James · Case study
Turning a personal brand into a 100,000-subscriber channel.
I proposed YouTube as a new discovery engine for Katelyn’s education business. I helped launch the channel and owned the process, from ideas and scripting to filming, editing, and publishing, for more than four years. My understanding of her audience, paired with what we learned from each video, shaped the channel’s direction and growth.
01 / THE OPPORTUNITY
Reaching new photographers.
Katelyn already had a loyal audience, respected photography courses, and strong email funnels. I saw YouTube as the missing discovery channel: a way to reconnect with longtime followers while introducing her teaching to photographers who had never encountered her work.
I proposed the channel, shaped the launch strategy, and built the content plan around her teaching style, her audience’s real problems, and the larger goals of her education business.
02 / MY ROLE
Running the whole channel.
For more than four years, I owned the complete YouTube process and kept every part moving together.
Strategy & programming
Channel direction, audience insight, video concepts, recurring formats, scripts, outlines, and the publishing calendar.
Production
Filming, camera and audio, lighting, on-camera direction, and making each production day efficient.
Post-production & packaging
Complete edits, graphics, titles, thumbnails, descriptions, and final uploads.
Publishing & improvement
YouTube Studio analysis, performance reviews, content iteration, and maintaining a dependable weekly schedule.
03 / THE CONTENT ENGINE
Content for growth and course sales.
We used two complementary kinds of content to grow the audience and support the business.
REACH
Gear through a working photographer’s eyes.
Katelyn’s practical perspective on cameras and lenses made the channel useful beyond her existing audience. Canon R6 and RF lens videos became a consistent source of search, discovery, and long-tail viewership.
TRUST & CONVERSION
Education tied to her real expertise.
Wedding Day 101, Behind the Image, and other teaching formats served her core audience more directly. They deepened trust, demonstrated the value of her approach, and connected naturally to her courses and other offerings.
04 / THE RESULT
Channel results.
The channel grew from zero to more than 100,000 subscribers and seven million views. It gave Katelyn a repeatable way to reach new photographers, strengthen the relationship with her existing audience, and support course launches and sales.
The growth came from treating YouTube as part of the business—not as a collection of isolated videos.

In Katelyn’s words
“Tyler is the reason I have 115,000 subscribers on my YouTube Channel. He didn’t just film content for me, he produced and directed every single episode.”
